Biographical Note Ambassador Yasmine CHATILA ZWAHLEN Ambassador of Switzerland to Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu Yasmine Chatila Zwahlen was born in Beirut, Lebanon into a Swiss-Lebanese Family. She graduated from the philosophic-historic Faculty of the University of Bern, where she completed her studies in Islamic Studies, Languages of Northern Africa and Western Asia, as well as English Literature. She commenced her diplomatic career in 1994, first at the Swiss Development Cooperation in Bern, followed by the Swiss Embassy in Cairo. From 1995 to 1997, she was responsible for the Middle East Desk of the Political Planning Staff of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Between 1997 and 2001, she acted as Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman and Media Relations Officer. In that capacity, she initiated a Swiss Government Information Service in Geneva, catering for international Media accredited both to the United Nations Office and the Swiss Government. In 2001, Mrs Chatila was transferred to the Swiss Embassy in Damascus as Deputy Head of Mission. In 2005, she was transferred to the Swiss Embassy in Lisbon, again as Deputy Head of Mission. Both in Damascus and in Lisbon, she job-shared with her husband who is also a career Diplomat in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Back at Headquarters in Bern in 2008, Mrs Chatila took over the responsibility for the Science Diplomacy Section of the FDFA. In August 2012, the Swiss Government appointed Mrs Chatila Ambassador of Switzerland to Costa Rica. She shared the job of Head of Mission in San José with her husband Pedro Zwahlen, who was accredited as Ambassador of Switzerland to El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama, with seat in San José. Since January 2017, Mrs Chatila is the Ambassador (designate) to Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, with seat in Canberra. As Head of Mission, she shares the job with her husband Pedro Zwahlen, who is the Ambassador of Switzerland to Australia. Yasmine Chatila and Pedro Zwahlen have two teenage children who are studying in Canberra.
